Job Searching Through the Pandemic Tip #3

This is the third post in a series of job searching tips during the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. We know it’s hard right now to think about job searching, but if you are making an effort to find work, we’re here for you. If you would like to speak to a counsellor, check our Covid-19 Provision post for details on how to reach out.

It’s hard sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring when you have sent out applications. The temptation to switch on Netflix and breeze through a few seasons of your favourite show is pretty enticing. However, if you are tired of watching endless hours of streaming content, why not sharpen some of your skills – or learn a new one?

Here are a few ways you can develop competitive skills for the workforce from the comfort of your own home.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning offers over 16,000 free and paid courses with completion certificates that users can embed on their LinkedIn profiles that employers will see. You can also embed the skills you’ve learned from courses into your LinkedIn profile after completing a course. People have found this helpful for a variety of skills including soft skills that don’t necessarily have a technical certification.

If you’re interested in taking a LIL course and you’re signed up with an Employment Counsellor through EH, let your Counsellor know and we’ll help you access the course. Call or email us if you want to sign up for a Counsellor.

City School by Mohawk College

Mohawk College has offered free college-level courses for several years through their City School program. They have recently moved their course offerings online to continue to support people interested in developing new skills or building on existing knowledge and experience.

Check their website for current course offerings.

Coursera

Coursera is an online training database, similar to LinkedIn Learning. Since Covid-19 restrictions have been put in place, they began offering several popular courses online for free.

QuickBooks ProAdvis0r Certification

We highly recommend this certification for administrators or accounting professionals!

Many employers are looking for QuickBooks expertise. The fastest way to gain the experience and knowledge an employer is looking for is by taking QuickBooks’ free ProAdvisor ceritification program.

We hope this list of skills training resources will help you find ways to develop some new skills or brush up on some existing ones while we wait until restrictions ease. As always, please reach out to us if you have any questions or wish to speak to someone about your job search.
