Job Description

Village Treehouse Childcare is searching for an individual who is excited interested in planning and preparing well-balanced nutritional snacks and meals for children ranging in age from 15 months to 4 years, using current resources and information available through the Ontario Dieticians in Public Health. This position is part time with hours ranging between 27 – 30 hours/week. The shift would be 8:00am – 2:00pm. The successful candidate would be responsible for all grocery shopping. Candidates need to be able to design a menu that is cost effective, nutritious and delicious and in consultation with the supervisor, assistant supervisor and/or staff. We are looking for someone who is excited about cooking and excited about what they can bring to a child care centre. Wage is hourly: $20-$22/hour. We are located at 126 Wilson Street East in Ancaster.

Tasks:

– Developing well-balanced menus, considering the importance of ensuring foods served represent the diverse culture of the children in attendance

– Developing a menu that is reflective of the philosophy of the centre by using as many fresh ingredients as possible

  • Understanding and awareness of food allergies and special medical and dietary requirements of children who attend the program
  • Posting menus in a location that is visible to families; ensure any changes to the menu are noted immediately
  • Preparing grocery and supply lists based on planned menus; ordering/purchase grocery and kitchen supplies, based on approved budget
  • Cooking/preparing meals and snacks according to Canada’s Food Guide (Daily)
  • Maintaining a clean, sanitary and organized kitchen
  • Maintaining a work environment that meets/exceeds all requirements from the Public Health department
  • Developing a positive working relationship with children, their families, and other staff members
  • Staff meetings, workshops and training as required

– Working with the staff to utilize food grown in the garden

– Following all policies/procedures of the centre

– Bringing bins of food up stairs with all dishes and serving ware. Collecting bins and completing all dishes.

Responsible for cleaning kitchen area including but not limited to fridges, freezers, cupboards etc.

-Bringing out garbage to the curb on garbage days.

Adhere to all Public Health guidelines and requirements regarding food preparation and cleanliness

– Responsible to prepare food for any children with food allergy and/or food restrictions and take this seriously


Requirements & Prerequisites

Qualifications:

  • Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Current Safe Food Handling Certification
  • 1 – 2 years of food service experience, preferably cooking for large groups
  • Standard First Aid and CPR – Level C – Certificate Qualifications (not mandatory – to be discussed)
  • Experience in the Food Industry considered an asset
  • Current Food Handlers’ Certificate, current Vulnerable Sector Check, Experience working in a child-focused environment, Ability to stand for long periods of time, bending/lifting required, Ability to work Independently and as a member of a team, Willingness to participate in: Staff Meetings, Professional Learning opportunities, etc., knowledge and understanding of the Hamilton community, community partners, Food Handlers certification and First Aid/CPR training.
  • Will need to provide doctor’s note stating the candidate is physically, mentally and emotionally capable to work in a child care and provide a list of full immunizations upon hiring as per Ministry of Education guidelines.
