Job Overview

Ontario Native Plants (ONP) is a division of Verbinnen’s Nursery, which is a team-oriented workplace built on Christian foundations of integrity. We sell native plants to the public through our e-commerce website (onplants.ca). We ship plants grown from Ontario seed within the province of Ontario. The business began in 2017 and has been growing steadily each year. Our store opens for pre-orders in March and we begin shipping trees and shrubs mid-April, followed by perennials in May. We are hiring positions for May and June to help prepare and pack orders during our busiest two months of the year. The position is fast paced and requires significant attention to detail.

TIMING: May to June 2023 (with some positions extending into the summer)

HOURS: May – 55 hours/week, Monday to Friday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm (with a half day on Saturdays), June – 45-55 hours/week (dependent on order quantities), July onwards – 40-45 hours/week

WAGE: $15.50/hour, with overtime pay after 45 hours

Responsibilities

You will be assigned to either the Outdoor or Indoor crew based on your unique strengths. There may be some cross-over between crews but for the most part you will stay on your designated crew.

 

  1. Outdoor Crew: Picking and Preparing Plants
  • Picking customer orders from our diverse selection of over 100 species of native plants
  • Cutting the bottoms off plant plugs and placing them in plastic pots
  • Placing coco fibre on the soil surface of plants and tagging plants
  • Plant maintenance such as pruning and spacing plants as needed
  1. Indoor Crew: Packing Plants
  • Identifying plants and double checking that the order was picked correctly
    • Attention to detail is required to ensure the proper order is fulfilled
  • Packing plants in boxes with a cardboard template to secure the pots
  • Weighing and measuring boxes to create a shipping label

Requirements & Prerequisites

Qualifications

The individual that we are looking for must possess:

  • Your own vehicle for transportation
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • A physical ability to keep up with tasks that involve a lot of walking and standing
    • These positions do not include any sitting tasks
  • Adaptability and ability to work effectively in a team
  • A friendly and approachable personality
  • A willingness to work in all weather environments

Assets to the position include:

  • Post Secondary Education in Environmental Science, Biology, or a similar subject
  • Knowledge of and experience with native plants in the outdoor landscape
  • Leadership experience
