Since 1974, The Hope Centre has helped to build and strengthen Welland by supporting the most vulnerable in our community with food security, housing stability and wellness programs. We offer a wide range of services that help individuals and families in Welland that are facing challenges related to poverty including mental health, addictions, food insecurity and housing instability.
Our mission is to assist, support, empower and advocate for the most vulnerable members of our community. We do this by providing essential services including homelessness prevention, housing-focused shelter, emergency food bank, daily lunches, counselling and more. Our vision is a community where every person has their basic needs met through support and compassion.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the HR Manager, the HR Generalist supports the delivery of HR services across core functional areas, including talent acquisition, employee relations, total rewards, learning and development, and HR operations. This role works closely with and supports the HR Manager in implementing HR programs, providing guidance to employees and leaders, and ensuring the consistent application of policies, procedures, and collective agreements within a unionized environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
- Support full-cycle recruitment activities, including drafting job postings, screening candidates, coordinating interviews, and preparing offer documentation.
- Partner with hiring managers to support workforce needs and recruitment planning.
- Develop and maintain talent pipelines by building relationships with community partners, educational institutions, and employment agencies.
- Represent the organization at job fairs, community events, and outreach initiatives to promote employment opportunities.
- Coordinate onboarding activities to ensure a positive and consistent new hire experience.
- Maintain recruitment systems and support reporting on hiring metrics.
Employee Relations & Labour Relations
- Provide first-level guidance to employees and managers on HR policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
- Support the interpretation and administration of collective agreements in a unionized environment.
- Assist the HR Manager in managing the grievance process, including documentation, tracking, and meeting coordination.
- Support workplace investigations, including note-taking, information gathering, and drafting summaries.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and compliant workplace culture.
- Escalate complex, sensitive, or high-risk employee relations matters to the HR Manager.
Total Rewards & Employee Development
- Support the administration of compensation programs, including job evaluations and market data collection.
- Assist with benefits administration, including enrollments, changes, and employee inquiries.
- Maintain accurate compensation and benefit records and support related reporting.
- Coordinate training sessions, workshops, and development initiatives.
- Support the performance management process, including tracking reviews and documentation.
- Assist in identifying development needs and maintaining training records.
HR Operations, Compliance & Health & Safety
- Maintain accurate employee records within personnel files.
- Ensure compliance with employment legislation and internal policies.
- Assist with HR reporting, audits, and policy updates.
- Prepare HR documentation, including letters and employment-related correspondence.
- Support workplace health and safety programs, including incident reporting and return-to-work coordination.
- Promote employee wellness initiatives.
- Support HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives led by the HR Manager.

Requirements & Prerequisites
QUALIFICATIONS
- 4+ years of progressive experience in a Human Resources role, with exposure to multiple functions of HR, required.
- CHRP designation or working toward designation, preferred.
- Post secondary education in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or related field, an asset.
- Experience in a unionized environment, an asset.
- Experience in the non—profit and/or community-based sector, an asset.
KEY CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with a demonstrated openness to adopting new technologies, including HRIS platforms and emerging tools such as AI, to streamline work and improve efficiency.
- Solid judgement and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organization skills.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive, healthy and safe workplace culture and environment.
- Adherence to health and safety standards at all times.
