Job Description

Who We Are:

Hamilton Bike Share Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that operates the year-round bike public bike sharing system and hosts the Everyone Rides Initiative, an equity program that is designed to remove barriers to accessing bikes through subsidized membership options, programming and community engagement. Our mission is “to enhance the quality of urban life by improving equitable access to bicycles in Hamilton.” The organization is powered by a hard-working, passionate, and resilient team of people who care about our city and the benefits of bike share.

Who You Are

You’re a person who is excited to work outside, enjoys biking, and is passionate about helping more people in Hamilton access bikes. You’re confident navigating the city by bike, and are comfortable with physical tasks like biking and lifting. You’re able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks, and are self-motivated to ensure your tasks are completed to a high standard.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a motivated individual to be a field-based Bicycle Inspector aka “Bike-Balancer”. The Bicycle Inspector’s primary responsibility is to keep the Hamilton Bike Share system running efficiently by inspecting bikes in the field and redistributing bikes in the system via trike and trailer. This position involves cycling in the field and frequent lifting of bikes (50 lbs). You’ll be responsible for using a bike trike/trailer to re-distribute bikes between hubs. Additional tasks will include inspecting bikes, field-based hardware adjustments, and bringing in bikes to our shop for maintenance. Even if you’re not a skilled bike mechanic, you’re someone who is curious and open to learning new skills. If you’re a quick learner who loves being outdoors, problem solving, and navigating the city – we’d welcome an application!

Please note this role requires evening and weekend shifts. We will work with the team to try to accommodate schedule requests.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely load and unload bikes onto a bike trailer, and bike around the city on a 3-wheeled Pedicab bike;
  • Redistribute bikes between hubs by bike;
  • Plan daily activities and routes to maximize impact of maintenance and redistribution;
  • Conduct maintenance of bikes at hubs (including mechanical and electronic issues);
  • Inspect bike hubs for safety, operability and cleanliness;
  • Accurately enter data and maintenance reports via a tablet.

Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Comfortable with repeatedly lifting bikes;
  • Ability to use a tablet;
  • An interest in being physically active;
