Job Description

Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation’s earliest nature sanctuaries. Comprising some 2700 acres of protected wetlands, botanical collections, parkland and display gardens, and within easy access of millions of nature-starved urban citizens, RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet. 6-month contract opportunity with the possibility of extending.

Principle Duties:                      

Supports horticultural staff through the operation of equipment and performing general contracting tasks.                                              

Specific duties may include:

  • Perform general contracting tasks such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, masonry and metal work, including welding, as required.
  • Uses tools required in the performance of general contracting tasks such as power hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Fabricate exhibits and its components along with setup of displays.
  • Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Manager, including snow removal, physical plant maintenance and preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Direct and supports students, temporary staff, volunteers and others as required.
  • Ensure a clean and safe work environment at all times.  Adhere to all safety rules, policies and procedures and wears all required personal protective equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Secondary School diploma required
  • Four years’ experience operating power-driven equipment including trucks, backhoes and bobcats.
  • Hold a valid class “D” driver’s license.
  • Ability to drive trucks and tractors with hydraulic attachments.
