Job Description

HFHT- Metered-Dose Inhaler Coordinator

The employee will improve the understanding of and efforts towards environmental sustainability within the Hamilton Family Health Team by auditing use of metered-dose inhalers and piloting a set alternative plan with clinicians. The employee will collaborate with other healthcare organizations to build and implement healthcare guidelines around environmental sustainability and respiratory care.

Specific tasks may include:

  • EMR searches of prescribed metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), before and after clinical intervention
  • Create and provide resources and tools to educate and support health professionals and medical staff in environmentally-friendly care delivery
  • Track uptake of and reporting on initiatives and general project progress
  • Communicate directly with healthcare practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, practice managers, and other individuals to ensure ease of uptake of various environmental initiatives within McMaster Family Practice
  • Attend and present at meetings and conferences about sustainable primary care, carbon literacy, etc. to healthcare groups within and without Hamilton
  • Identify and resolve barriers to uptake of sustainability guidelines (including patient accessibility)
  • Write and apply for grants to support project work
  • Develop an environmentally sustainable care Continued Medical Education (CME) module for residents training at the health team
  • Highlight and distribute environmental advocacy opportunities for healthcare practitioners
  • Critically evaluate project priorities in terms of climate impact mitigation, financial and time feasibility, simplicity, etc.
  • Identify areas for new sustainability initiatives within primary care

Knowledge of and experience with Electronic Medical Record programs, personal investment in environmental work, knowledge of the primary care system, and social determinants of health are assets.

Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Research skills and experience, including ability to conduct literature reviews
  • Understanding of the interrelationships between health, health care, and climate change (learn more at https://www.thelancet.com/countdown-health-climate)
  • Clear and compelling writing ability
  • High level of organization and teamwork ability
  • Minimum education: undergraduate degree (completed)
