Position Description
Department: Social Enterprise/Café
Reports to: Kitchen Manager |
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week

Location: Hamilton, ON | Posting Date: October 21st, 2022 |
Provides assistance in the kitchen for internal and external YWCA food services for childcare, transitional housing residents, the YWCA café and social enterprise catering.
- Assists with food preparation and cooking activities in the YWCA Café and YWCA catering;
- Prepares meals according to menu and recipes created by Head Chef/Sous Chef;
- Prepares meals for clients with allergies and special dietary needs;
- Acts as a mentor to the other cooks;
- Assists the Kitchen Manager with directing the work of the cooks;
- Assists with serving meals;
- Supports front of house as needed;
- Operates large and small kitchen appliances, including maintenance;
- Assists Kitchen Manager with inventory, and stocking shelves by reviewing ordering needs;
- Monitors and suggests improvements of inventory control process;
- Performs general housekeeping duties such as washing dishes, cleaning and sanitizing, emptying garbage bins;
- Ensures compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act;
- Contributes to building and supporting the kitchen/café team by helping where needed, using professional and respectful language, attending team meetings as required;
- Works safely and reports all workplace hazards and follows all YWCA Hamilton Health and Safety policies and procedures;
- Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
- Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works 37.50 hours work week;
- Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort: lifting up to 22 kg, bending and stooping;
- Various shifts of days, afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Requirements & Prerequisites
Qualifications
- Completion of 1-year College in culinary arts or minimum 3 years’ experience in food service;
- Must have Safe Food Handling certificate or willing to obtain at own time and cost;
- Strong attention to detail and communication skills;
- Strong understanding of dietary restrictions;
- Ability to follow a recipe;
- Ability to bring a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective to day to day work;
- Ability to work a schedule that includes various shifts;
- Baking, Line cooking and catering experience is an asset;
- Must provide a current Criminal Record Judicial Matters Police check or willingness to obtain at own cost;
- Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
- Valid Class G Driver’s License;
- Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
