Job Description

General Carpenter (No-Cost Pre-Apprenticeship Program)

 

The Career Foundation’s General Carpenter Pre-Apprenticeship program is delivered in partnership with Mohawk College and the Carpenter’s Union Local 18. It is geared toward individuals between the ages of 18 and 29 who have an interest in pursuing a career in carpentry/construction.

 

There is no cost to the participate!

 

The program runs for approximately 30 weeks (18 weeks in-class and a 12-week paid job placement). Participants receive General Carpenter Level 1 Apprenticeship training at the Stoney Creek Campus of Mohawk College, along with secondary trade exposure in Drywall, Acoustics and Lathing Application from the Carpenter’s Local 18 in Stoney Creek. In addition, pre-employment and job maintenance training will be provided to assist participants to develop skills for securing and retaining sustainable employment.

 

This program includes a 12-week paid placement, where you will acquire real-world, hands-on skills in carpentry and construction, including: 

  • Operating and maintaining carpentry tools and equipment
    • Measuring, cutting, and assembling materials made of wood and wood substitutes
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Gaining knowledge of various types of construction work

 

Program Eligibility:

  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 29
  • Minimum Grade 10 education
  • Unemployed or underemployed (working fewer than 20 hours per week)
  • Must be able to commit to full-time hours during the program
  • Willing to commute daily to the Mohawk College Stone Creek campus
