Job Description

Employment Hamilton (EH) has been delivering employment and training services to clients and employers since 1972. Funded by Employment Ontario, EH offers employment counselling, a Resource and Information Centre, Second Career, Canada-Ontario Job Grant and other programs / services.  We operate on a continuous improvement model in every facet of our services.

Overview of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Finance and the Executive Director, this full-time position requires an individual to effectively carry out all financial tasks related to the operation, including; general accounting, payroll, accounts payable and overall, ensuring accurate accounting control procedures for the organization.

Administer accounting systems that effectively meet the needs of the organization in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles

  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and impacts on the organization’s books of account (e.g. changes through CRA)
  • Post journal entries, reconcile accounts, prepare trial balance of books, maintain general ledgers
  • Maintain up-to-date, complete and systematic filing system to support financial records
  • Analyze journal and ledger entries, statements, expenditures, charity returns and other records, documents and systems to ensure compliance
  • Timely and accurate preparation of reports and financial statements for Executive Director, Board of Directors and funders
  • Receive payment requests and use database systems to record expenditures
  • Propose improvements to systems, methods and procedures in alignment with Employment Hamilton’s continuous improvement practices

Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Certificate in bookkeeping/accounting with a minimum of three years of related bookkeeping / payroll experience (professional accreditation in accounting a strong asset)
  • Previous experience working in the not-for profit sector is an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of
    • accepted accounting practices and principles
    • auditing practices and principles
    • applicable laws, codes and regulations including federal and provincial legislation affecting Charities
  • Excellent computer skills with an emphasis on Excel (Working knowledge of MYOB is an asset)
  • Strong organizational, financial and office administration capabilities with excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative to efficiently manage multiple tasks with established deadlines and work effectively within a team
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis and reasoning
  • Independently able to successfully carry out all duties with extreme accuracy
