Permanent, full-time (25-40 hrs/week)

Wage: $17.50/hr

Hamilton Bike Share Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that operates the year-round 825 bike public bike sharing system and hosts the Everyone Rides Initiative, an equity program that is designed to remove barriers to accessing bikes through subsidized membership options, programming and community engagement. Our mission is “to enhance the quality of urban life by improving equitable access to bicycles in Hamilton.” 

 

Who You Are

You’re a skilled and comfortable driver, who is excited to navigate the city, work outside, and is passionate about helping more people in Hamilton access bikes. You’re confident navigating the city in large cargo vans, and are comfortable with the physical task of lifting and loading bikes. You’re able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks, and are self-motivated to ensure your tasks are completed to a high standard. 

 

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a motivated individual to be a field-based Driver aka “Rebalancer”. The Driver-Rebalancer’s primary responsibility is to keep the Hamilton Bike Share system running efficiently by redistributing bikes in the system via truck and/or cargo van. This position requires driving safely between hubs to load bikes and redistribute them throughout the system as required. This position requires regular lifting and loading of bikes (50 lbs) onto a vehicle. Additional tasks will include inspecting bikes and hubs; installing hubs;  tracking bike data; field-based hardware adjustments, and bringing in bikes to our shop for maintenance. 

 

This job allows for flexibility in scheduling shifts between 7am – 11pm, 7 days per week. Please make your preferred availability known in your cover letter. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Drive the redistribution truck safely in an urban setting;
  • Operate vehicles safely while following all relevant legislation;
  • Redistribute bikes between hubs and to/from workshop for service;
  • Maintain bikes at hubs (including mechanical and electronic issues);
  • Install and maintain hubs, including racks, bikes, signs, and space around hub;
  • Inspect bike hubs for safety, operability and cleanliness;
  • Report and ensure processes are documented electronically via web and tablet apps;
  • Maintain a clean, organized work space, both in the HQ workshop and inside the vehicles;
  • Interact with bike share riders and other members of the public; treat with respect and dignity;
  • Work as part of the HBSI team to provide excellent bike availability and rider experience;

Requirements & Prerequisites

Requirements

  • Valid class G driver’s license; clean driver’s abstract/able to safely operate a motor vehicle;
  • Comfortable and confident driving a service vehicle throughout the city;
  • Willing to work in all types of weather and safely load and unload equipment at job sites;
  • Good problem solving skills ;
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting on a regular basis; able to easily lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally;
  • Ability to use a tablet; 
  • An interest in being physically active;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Pickup, delivery and driving experience is an asset.
