Hamilton Bike Share Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that operates the year-round public bike sharing system and hosts the Everyone Rides Initiative (ERI), an equity program that is designed to remove barriers to accessing bikes through subsidized membership options, programming and community engagement. Our mission is “to enhance the quality of urban life by improving equitable access to bicycles in Hamilton.” The organization is powered by a hard working, passionate, and resilient team of people who care about our city and the benefits of bike share. 

The Opportunity

We are seeking a candidate to fulfill the role of Driver-Based Rebalancer. This role within the Operations division will take on responsibilities with the Field department encompassing bike rebalancing, bike and hub maintenance, and other field-based tasks.

Hamilton Bike Share is responsible for operating the City of Hamilton’s bike share system, including all maintenance, repair and field operations that enable thousands of users to utilize the service to get around the city.

The Driver-Based Rebalancer is a responsible, focused, and motivated team member and is committed to HBSI’s mission “to enhance the quality of urban life by improving equitable access to bicycles in Hamilton”.

This position reports to the Field Operations Manager.

Hours of Work

Wednesdays: 4-10pm

Thursdays: 4-10pm

Saturdays: 8:30am-2pm

Responsibilities 

  • Drive the redistribution truck safely in an urban setting; 
  • Operate vehicles safely while following all relevant legislation; 
  • Redistribute bikes between hubs and to/from workshop for service, including the lifting and loading of bikes into trucks/cargo vans; 
  • Conduct inspections of and maintain bikes at hubs (including mechanical and electronic issues) and at the workshop; 
  • Install and maintain hubs, including racks, bikes, signs, and space around hub; 
  • Inspect bike hubs for safety, operability and cleanliness; 
  • Report and ensure processes are documented electronically via web and tablet apps; 
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace, both in the workshop and inside the vehicles; 
  • Interact with bike share riders and other members of the public, and treat them with respect and dignity; 
  • Work as part of the HBSI team to provide excellent bike availability and rider experience;
  • Perform data entry as required.
  • Provide event support for community engagement events and public rides
  • Be an ambassador for Bike Share for public events and during day-to-day duties 

Requirements & Prerequisites

Requirements 

  • Valid class G driver’s license; clean driver’s abstract/able to safely operate a motor vehicle; 
  • Comfortable and confident driving a service vehicle throughout the city; 
  • Willing to work in all types of weather and safely load and unload equipment at job sites;
  • Good problem-solving skills; 
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting on a regular basis; able to easily lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally; 
  • Ability to use a tablet; 
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
