Job Description

• Prepare and cook healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide
• Maintain a safe, clean, sanitary kitchen and eating area, meeting the standards set out by Public Health
• Plan menus in advance, determine size of food portions, estimate food requirements (and costs), and monitor and order supplies in a timely manner; Responsible for ordering, receiving and storing all food items
• Provide supervision and support to other staff and volunteers in the kitchen
• Prepare statistics on numbers of meals and people served in the programs
• Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment
• Wash and sanitize dishes and utensils; follows the Food Handlers Guide in the preparation and storage of food
• Remove trash and clean kitchen garbage containers
• Complies at all times with the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure a safe working environment
• Provide and maintain frozen healthy options for all individuals to be served as back up meals
• Solid understanding of the Canada Food Guide
• Valid Certificate – Standard First Aid with Level C CPR


Requirements & Prerequisites

• A minimum of 5 years of experience cooking in a commercial kitchen
• Ability to plan and cook for large volumes of clients
• Experience developing menus informed by nutritional requirements and budget
• Experience providing supervision and mentorship to support staff and volunteers in the kitchen.
• Completion of secondary school is required
• Food handler training certification required
• Completion of an apprenticeship for cooks is an asset
