Good Shepherd Centres Hamilton, a ministry of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, strives to enhance the quality of life for all who seek assistance and support in our community.  A Temporary Full-Time position, with Staying Home, an eviction prevention program at the Family Centre currently exists in the role of:

 

Community Housing Worker

Responsibilities:

Rooted in Hospitality and guided by Good Shepherd’s Mission Values of Availability, Adaptability, Quality, Dignity, and Responsibility, the Community Housing Worker will provide housing based case management services to women and families at risk of eviction. Assessment, intake, goal setting, case management, crisis prevention and intervention, supportive counselling, education, advocacy, and linkages with other community services.  In partnership with the woman or family, create a plan to maintain their housing and help them achieve that plan over a 6 to 12-month period. Conduct home visits. Respond to housing concerns as they arise including maintenance, repairs, pest infestations, home maintenance, rent non-payment, complaints from neighbours, complaints from landlords, and safety issues.

Work Conditions:

Most work is done in the community. Visiting women and families in their home, attending Landlord Tenant Board, attending appointments with other community agencies is required. Must be willing and able to assist in a hands-on capacity with a woman or family’s housing plan. Time management skills are necessary in a high energy, changing environment. Ability to work independently. Must be comfortable with advocacy and navigating systems.

Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in social services or a related field is required. Preferred candidates for the above positions will be knowledgeable of and have experience working with a range of issues impacting women and families including homelessness, violence against women and children, immigration, poverty, mental illness and substance use. Sound knowledge of the housing system in Hamilton, the Residential Tenancies Act, and the Ontario Human Rights Code required. Candidates will have an understanding of and be comfortable working from a person-centered, trauma-informed approach. Minimum two years’ experience working in the housing or homelessness sector required. Fluency in a 2nd language is an asset.  CPR certification or willingness to be certified is required. Valid G license required.

Hours of Work:

Shifts are Day shifts (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and one afternoon shift a week (11 p.m. – 7 a.m.). Shifts are scheduled Monday to Friday. Some flexibility in work hours may be required.
