Job Description

Requirements & Prerequisites

Good Shepherd Centres Hamilton, a ministry of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, strives to enhance the quality of life for all who seek assistance and support in our community. A Permanent Full Time position at the Community Support Services for Women and Children program (30 Pearl St. N.) currently exists in the role of:

Child and Youth Facilitator

Hours of work: Up to 80 hours every 2 weeks, primarily evenings and some weekends

Good Shepherd Women’s Services, through its various programs, is seeing increasing numbers of children who have experienced trauma, witnessed or experienced abuse and are living in poverty. The Child and Youth program is a psycho-educational program designed to support children up to 18 years of age who witness woman abuse, and to provide individual and family counselling addressing the complexities these children face. The Child and Youth facilitator also works with mothers and caregivers, providing insight on the impacts of woman abuse on children and support with developing healthy, meaningful relationships between caregiver and child.

The Child and Youth Facilitator will work in collaboration with the LEAF Facilitator to provide group programming including but not limited to: LEAF and MIM. Our programs often work closely with community stakeholders, including schools, other VAW agencies, child welfare and family court systems to develop unique programming for children and women in the VAW programs.

The challenge in this job is two-fold: 1) engaging children to provide individualized counselling and therapeutic interventions to a diverse range of emotional and physical responses to trauma; 2) communication and coordination with external agencies, including joint public education, program intakes and program delivery. The rewards of this work include seeing the resiliency within children and families as they recover; seeing how your role fits within the larger social justice work of the department; and, joining a passionate, innovative outreach services team.

Minimum requirements include two years of children’s therapeutic counselling and a completed post-secondary education in social services or related program; an MSW with a focus on children and their families is an asset. CPR/First Aid is required; ASK suicide prevention is an asset. A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive Good Shepherd vehicles is required. Fluency in a second language is an asset.
