Language Interpreter
Job Description
INCommunities (Interpreters Niagara-Hamilton program) is currently looking for accredited langauge interpreters to work in the City of Hamilton and/or the Niagara region. Interpreters are self-employed contractors who offer their services ‘on-call/as-needed’ through the office of INCommunities. End users include police officers, health-care providers, lawyers, shelter counsellors, child protection workers, social welfare offices, schools, and public health educators.
Qualifications:
Fluency and proficiency in English and another Language.
Post Secondary Education (preferred)
Language Interpreter Training Certificate.
Successful completion of a Language Test (ILSAT or CILSAT).
Police clearance.
While we invite all qualified applicants, we have a specific need for the following languages/dialects:
Albanian, Amharic, Armenian, Assyrian, Bengali, Burmese, Calabrese, Cantonese, Czech, Dari, Dinka, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Hungarian, Igbo, Indonesian, Italian, Karen, Khmer, Kirundi, Kurdish, Latvian, Lao, Lingala, Lithuanian, Low German, Mandarin, Nepali, Oromo, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Shona, Somali, Swahili, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Tibetan, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Urdu, Yoruba.
Skills:
Familiarity with social services including legal and health sectors.
Understanding of issues related to violence against women.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in stressful situations.
Active listening, note taking, faithful and accurate transmission of the message, knowledge of the social, civic and legal systems.
Adherence to the Code of Ethics and role boundaries.
Requirements & Prerequisites
