Hamilton Bike Share Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that operates the year-round public bike sharing system and hosts the Everyone Rides Initiative (ERI), an equity program that is designed to remove barriers to accessing bikes through subsidized membership options, programming and community engagement. Our mission is “to enhance the quality of urban life by improving equitable access to bicycles in Hamilton.” The organization is powered by a hard working, passionate, and resilient team of people who care about our city and the benefits of bike share.
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated individual to coordinate programming at Hamilton Bike Share and the ERI’s Adaptive Bike Hubs, located in Gage Park and Bayfront Park. Through this program, groups from our partner organizations and members of the public can access adaptive bikes for rides in the park. The Adaptive Bike Coordinator will coordinate and facilitate rides at the Adaptive Bike Hubs for people with disabilities, seniors, and other community members who can benefit from adaptive bikes, as well as assist with other outreach activities, ERI programs, marketing projects, and administrative tasks.
This is a hybrid role with a mix of remote work and on-site engagements, that will require regular weekend shifts and some evenings. You will work an expected Tuesday – Saturday schedule with one weeknight evening shift per week, plus occasional evening or weekend special events.
Hours of Work
35 hours/week, temporary (expected end date: October 31, 2026)
Expected hours of work are 8:30am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday, except 3:30-8:30pm on Wednesdays
Work locations: Gage Park Adaptive Bike Hub, Bayfront Park Adaptive Bike Hub, and remote work
Who You Are:
- Hands-on and ready to be outdoors handling bikes, assisting riders, and engaging with the public.
- Organized: you stay up to date managing a busy calendar, responding to messages, and keeping track of results.
- Welcoming, personable, patient, and supportive with riders and members of the public. You communicate clearly, listen to individuals’ lived experiences, and meet them where they’re at.
- Motivated to help grow the adaptive bike program!
Responsibilities:
- Liaise with partner organizations and schedule appointments with riders by phone and email;
- Meet riders and/or support workers at the Adaptive Bike Hubs at scheduled times to open and close hub, collect signed waivers, and set up access to adaptive bikes;
- Distribute equipment (adaptive bikes and helmets), adjust fit for riders, and monitor equipment for maintenance and repairs;
- Support riders, many of whom may be first-time riders or have physical or developmental disabilities, by providing additional instruction or accompanying them on a ride;
- Track program metrics and update or develop program documentation;
- Assist with other cycling education programming, such as Learn to Ride workshops with adaptive bikes and two-wheeled bike share bikes;
- Collaborate with the Community Engagement Manager to take photos, create videos, and create social media and newsletter content promoting the Adaptive Bike Program and Bike Share system;
- Identify and develop relationships with new partner organizations to expand the reach of the Adaptive Bike Program;
- Identify and carry out opportunities to market and promote the Adaptive Bike Program to the general public, e.g. distributing posters across Hamilton;
- Serve as an ambassador for bike share and our organization;
- General outreach: assist with events such as group rides, festivals, or workshops to promote Hamilton Bike Share, the Adaptive Bike Program, and other ERI programs, which may take place on weekends and evenings;
- Complete administrative tasks to support general HBSI & ERI programming, such as: creating accounts for new riders, monitoring accounts for infractions, creating email communication templates, updating event calendars, responding to general email inquiries, and/or assisting with McMaster U-Pass engagement and office hours at McMaster University during the fall;
- Assist or lead drop-in bike share rider support hours at partner organizations or the Adaptive Bike Hubs;
- Other duties as required.
Requirements & Prerequisites
Requirements:
- Experience leading programming, working with members of the public, and/or teaching or facilitating workshops;
- Ability to move large bikes in and out of a shipping container, including a six inch step;
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, independently or with minimal supervision;
- Strong active listening, verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to build bridges with new riders from diverse backgrounds;
- Strong organizational skills and punctuality;
- Flexibility to adapt programming based on the circumstances, as well as to work some evenings and weekends as needed for programming;
- Confidence riding a bike in an urban setting;
- Ability to excel and complete tasks with minimum supervision.
Assets:
- Interest in and experience using Hamilton Bike Share;
- Experience riding an adaptive bike;
- Lived experience of a disability or experience working with people with disabilities;
- First aid certification;
- Language skills relevant to the needs of our program (e.g. Arabic, Spanish, French).
Please note this role has been submitted for Canada Summer Jobs funding, and as a result to be eligible you must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
