Job Description

The Diocese of Niagara is actively recruiting a Property and Maintenance Assistant on a temporary, part-time basis to support the daily operations of Cathedral Place (buildings and grounds) and other local diocesan properties, including minor repairs, cleaning and maintenance, yard work, monitoring of building systems, set up and take down for facility users, and reception coverage as needed. This position is supervised and the direct report of the Property Manager and works collaboratively with Cathedral Place staff and facility users.

The Property and Maintenance Assistant will generally be available onsite at Cathedral Place, weekdays during the work week, although they may from time to time be called to attend to other properties for periods of the day. The time allocated at each site shall be driven by the maintenance and upkeep requirements of the properties, as well as by events held onsite. As a result, there will be times when the Property and Maintenance Assistant will be required to attend to the property outside of their usual working hours.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspecting property conditions to ensure safe, effective, and presentable operations, including daily walk-throughs and monthly fire safety checks
  • Coordinating maintenance work upon request of the Property Manager
  • Providing set up & take down services, tending to the needs of common facilities [i.e. bathroom supplies], including removing waste and recycling, cleaning, and tidying as necessary
  • Securing the building, when scheduled, by ensuring locked doors, closed windows, lights turned off, and the security alarm is set
  • Performing minor repairs, yard work, and other tasks as assigned
  • Serving as front desk receptionist for scheduled events, meetings and worship services, including answering phones, granting building access, greeting and directing visitors to meeting/events rooms, and monitoring their exiting the building
  • Addressing critical incident and emergency situations as per policies and best practices in a quick, calm, and efficient manner
  • Being available, as scheduled, as a contact for the security surveillance company
  • Performing the duties of the Property Manager when the Property Manager is not available

Typical schedule will be an average of 20-30 hours per week, at a rate of $21-$23 per hour based on experience.

Duration: 6-month contract

Requirements & Prerequisites

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in commercial and/or industrial maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, fire, and electrical systems
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Experience using a variety of hand and electrical tools
  • Physical ability to safely lift equipment and parts associated with the work at hand, and comfortable using a ladder.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced physically demanding environment
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, W.H.M.I.S. and other relevant legislation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Capacity to multi-task and effectively prioritize to meet established deadlines
  • Proven track record of making sound decisions and solving problems
  • Access to a reliable, insured vehicle and have a valid driver’s license
