Overnight Warming Bus Worker
Job Description
• One-on-one contact with individuals living in at-risk conditions, and providing immediate support (Coffee, warmth, etc.) as well as support accessing other services (shelters, income supports, taxes, etc)
• Providing a comfortable, inclusive, welcome environment for clients accessing the Warming Bus
• Engage clients in rapport-building, friendly conversation
• Supportive counseling and crisis intervention
• Advocate on behalf of clients and/or support them to advocate for themselves
• Monitoring clients who are sleeping
• Work with bus driver on route / locations of encampments
• Collaborate and coordinate services with community agencies – City of Hamilton, hospitals, pharmacies, transportation services, shelters, postal services, etc.
• Marking client updates in the HIFIS system as well as tracking attendance for statistics purposes
• Administering and entering VI-SPDAT scores into the HIFIS system to facilitate connection to the coordinated access system
• Perform regular safety checks with clients
• Light cleaning duties as required
• Other duties as required
Requirements & Prerequisites
• A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a community service based non-profit organization with experience working out in the community
• Diploma in social work, social services or related fields, or specific training in counseling and specific Mental Health Training
• Experience in psychiatric/mental health services and other community programs
• Knowledge of community resources and services, social and environmental determinants of health, health promotion, disease prevention, curative, rehabilitative, and supportive services
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment start date.
• Valid Certificate – Standard First Aid with Level C CPR is an asset
• Non-violent crisis intervention training is an asset
• Fluent in at least one other language is an asset
• A valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle are required as some local travel is necessary.
