Job Title: Construction Lead Hand

Reports To: Director of Building Services

Department: Building Services

Status: Full-time, 40 hours/week, 8 AM – 4 PM, occasional weekend and evening work

Location: Various sites throughout the Greater Hamilton Area

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton is currently seeking an outgoing, self-motivated, and highly organized Construction Lead Hand to join our growing organization in the Building Services department.

The Construction Lead Hand is a junior position that is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of our construction, repair, and warehouse sites while strengthening relationships with our volunteers, build partners, and the community at large.

Habitat Hamilton strengthens its mission with the support of the ReStore, a social enterprise and home improvement warehouse that offers new and used affordable merchandise to the general public. Revenues generated by the ReStore fund all administrative and operational costs at Habitat Hamilton. Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Director of Building Services and working in a field capacity, this role serves to:

  • provide support to both our Site Superintendent and RePair Program Coordinator
  • assist with the day-to-day delivery of our home construction, building repair, warehousing, and volunteer build day activities
  • strengthen and grow our relationships with volunteers, build partners, and the community at large

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in initial site set-up and end of project close-out
  • Assist with day-to-day site opening, deployment, and shut-down
  • Aid with product and tool procurement, handling, and storage
  • Participate in daily safety talks
  • Instruct, support, and encourage site volunteers, including students
  • Plan, organize, and complete assigned tasks in accord with instructions, budgets, and timelines
  • Maintain site cleanliness and organization
  • Report to supervisor(s) on daily progress towards assigned tasks and goals
  • Maintain and submit receipts in an organized and timely manner
  • Actively and punctually participate in departmental and affiliate meetings
  • Advocate on behalf of the affiliate
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements & Prerequisites

Experience & Education:

  • 1 to 3 years building construction/home renovation experience and/or diploma from a recognized community college construction or renovation trades program
  • Understanding of various facets of residential construction, building repair, and property maintenance
  • Experience speaking in front of large groups and leading teams of volunteers
  • Basic computer literacy, including familiarly with Microsoft Office products

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent general contracting/home renovation skills
  • Comfortable leading groups of volunteers with a range of skill sets
  • Time management, organization, and problem solving skills
  • A capacity to self-motivate, prioritize job tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • The desire and willingness to collaborate as part of an integrated work team
  • Effective tool handling and preventive maintenance knowledge
  • Active listing and interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities
  • A positive outlook and attitude, including respect for co-workers and peers
  • An unwavering commitment to job site health and safety

Other must haves include:

  • An understanding of and commitment to Habitat Hamilton’s mission, vision, and values
  • An ability to empathize with the populations Habitat serves
  • Excellent physical fitness and mobility
  • Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Ability to complete a police check
  • A valid driver’s licence and the use of a reliable vehicle is mandatory (mileage will be paid)
