Seasonal, contract (May – August 2022)
Salary: $17.20/hour, 35 hours/week

Hamilton Bike Share Inc. is the not-for-profit organization that operates the year-round 825 bike public bike sharing system and hosts the Everyone Rides Initiative, an equity program that is designed to remove barriers to accessing bikes through subsidized membership options, programming and community engagement. You’re a person who is excited to work outside, enjoys biking, and is passionate about helping more people in Hamilton access bikes. You’re confident in navigating the city by bike, have excellent problem-solving skills, and have the ability to think critically and troubleshoot on the fly. You’re able to work independently to complete tasks, and are self-motivated to ensure your tasks are completed to a high standard. You enjoy working with tools, and have a general interest in bike maintenance and repair. Even if you’re not a skilled bike mechanic, you’re someone who is curious and open to learning new skills. The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated individual to be a field-based Maintenance Mechanic aka “Bike Checker” to help regularly check and inspect bikes in the Hamilton Bike Share system. You would mostly work outdoors, helping to maintain bikes and ensure our users have a positive and safe experience using Hamilton Bike Share. You will make short bike trips using both pedal and e-bikes throughout the day, track the status of bikes, and identify and report issues. Tasks will include inspecting bikes, field-based hardware adjustments, pumping tires, and bringing in bikes to our shop for maintenance. Depending on interest and skill-set, there is potential to assist with additional in-shop bike maintenance.
Please note this role requires evening and weekend shifts. We will work with the team to try to accommodate schedule requests.
Responsibilities:
- Make regular, short trips by bike to multiple bike hub locations;
- Conduct daily inspections of bikes, hubs and racks;
- Track the status of bikes, and identify and report issues;
- Conduct in-field maintenance of bikes including: battery replacement, tire pumping; minor repairs (changing bells, seats, tightening bolts, changing tires)
- Use a tablet to accurately record and enter information related to bikes and their maintenance;
- Assist mechanics in bike repair and maintenance as necessary.
Requirements & Prerequisites
Requirements:
- Confident riding a bike in an urban setting;
- Confident using tools and making minor adjustments and repairs to bikes;
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions;
- Ability to move and lift 50 lbs;
- Ability to use a tablet;
- Ability to operate a power screwdriver;
- An interest in being physically active;
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
Assets:
- Bike repair skills;
- Strong communication skills;
- Familiar with how bike share works;
- Data analysis skills.
Please note this role is contingent on funding by Canada Summer Jobs. As a result to be eligible you must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
