Job Description

Job purpose

Under the direction of the Curator, the Education Coordinator assumes responsibility for the delivery of strategic educational programs and initiatives related to the history, language, artistic practices and teachings of Haudenosaunee culture.

Duties and responsibilities

The Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the strategic operations of the Museum Education Department for the WCC. This includes:

Program Administration – 30%
Maintaining up-to-date Education Department statistics, finances, board reports, department staff performance reviews and programming evaluations

Program Delivery – 30%
Coordinating tours and workshops both onsite and virtually as well as part of education outreach.
Delivery of outreach presentations and virtual workshops to WCC’s support communities (Six Nations, Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, and Wahta Mohawk Territory).
Scheduling tour bookings and paperwork (confirmation forms, invoices).

Managing Museum Education Staff -30%
Leading staff (Group Visits and Rentals Coordinator, Cultural Interpreters) towards Museum Education department objectives
Continual review and development of educational programming in compliance with the Federal and Provincial curriculum.

Networking, Partnerships, Collaboration- 10%
Working collaboratively with other WCC departments, school boards, and residential school Survivors.
Networking and fostering new partnerships, maintaining and strengthening relationships with academic and support communities.

Working conditions

The Education Coordinator’s regular hours are from 9-4:30, Monday to Friday. Outreach and special events may require travel and work outside of regular hours. Some workshops require facilitation outdoors and virtually. At times the Education Coordinator will work with and accommodate guests with special needs, in which case extra attention and precautions may be required.

Physical requirements

The Education Coordinator position will involve set up and facilitate workshops and tours as well as office work. The job may involve standing for long periods of time, physically participating in Music & Dance, Traditional Games and Indigenous Plants walk outdoors.


Requirements & Prerequisites

Qualifications

Degree in education, tourism, Indigenous studies, museum studies or visual arts from a recognized post-secondary institution and five-year experience in museum education, arts education or community arts.

• Creativity and imagination are required in developing new programming ideas.
• Have experience in public speaking and/or group presentations.
• Is proficient in all aspects of management of organization and supervision of staff.
• Have some knowledge of federal and provincial education policies, procedures and programs.
• Have experience in Educational curriculum development.
• Possess knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people, their culture, history and traditions, especially in Ontario.
• Possessing a Haudenosaunee language or an artistic background an asset
• Possess knowledge of museum and gallery functions.
• Possess knowledge of group safety and dynamics.
• Possess a knowledge of the Woodland Cultural Centre’s mandate, programs, services and resources.
• Must have valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
