Job Description

Summary of Position:

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides care for the comfort and safety of clients and helps to create a climate that promotes optimal physical, social and emotional well-being.

 

The PSW provides care in a manner that is consistent with a client-centered care philosophy and in a way that encourages and supports the client’s rights and self-determination. The PSW will provide care in an unbiased manner, which recognizes and is sensitive to the cultural diversity, ethnicity, and uniqueness of our client population.

 

The PSW will assist clients in attaining and/or maintaining an optimum level of independence in acute care hospital facilities. The types of acute care hospital units include; medicine, surgery, rehab, complex continuing care, mental health, and pediatrics.

 

The PSW performs any combination of the following duties in the care of facility or private patients under the direction of Facility nursing staff:

  • Answers call bell lights
  • Personal care – full or partial assist (bathing, dressing, grooming, hair, teeth, mouth care)
  • Serves and collects food trays
  • Feeds patients who do not have swallowing difficulties when approved by Facility nurse
  • Transports patients using wheelchair, stretcher
  • Transfers patients to and from bed to (stretcher, wheelchair, commode, walker)
  • Assists patients with ambulation (cane, walker, crutch)
  • Maintains privacy of patient and confidentiality while care is being performed
  • Escorts patients to procedures and remains with them when required
  • Turns and repositions patients alone or with assistance to prevent pressure sores
  • Changes and straightens bed linens and replaces linen
  • Runs errands, answers telephone
  • Measures and records fluid intake and output as required
  • Cleans and stores supplies (e.g., bedpans, urinals, restocks linen at bedside, tidies up bedside environment)
  • Elimination needs (assistance to bathroom, commode chair, bedpan/urinal, incontinence, emptying drainage bag)
  • Maintains skin care (perineal care)
  • Maintain safety, security and dignity of patient
  • Provides comfort measures to patient

Job Knowledge:

Possesses ability to perform duties as described in general summary. Has an understanding of and practices patient privacy and confidentiality; displays problem identification and conflict resolution.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Excellent communication skills
  2. Ability to prioritize and organize care based on changing conditions on the unit or with Client
  3. Able to perform duties as outlined in summary,
  4. Can transport objects, equipment, and Clients to various parts of the facility, including heavy but mobile equipment, some of which may weigh 100 pounds or more, which may be pushed or pulled on wheels.
  5. Must be able to stand and walk for continuous periods of time
  6. Must be capable of maintaining balance to prevent falling when walking or standing
  7. Must be capable of stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and squatting required during positioning patients and observation skills
  8. Must be cable of carrying up to 50 pounds for transporting equipment and supplies; must be capable of moving and/or lifting patients from bed/wheelchair to stretcher; moving devices are available; these patients may weigh up to or over 300 pounds
  9. Must be capable of a wide range of hand, wrist, and finger motions, including pinching, grasping, and fingering required for tasks such as writing, answering phones, adjusting dials, using and carrying equipment and supplies and positioning patients
  10. Must be able to assist in properly positioning Clients in bed, wheelchair, stretcher
  11. Must be able to physically respond to emergency situations in accordance with established policies and procedures such as CPR or Code White
  12. Must be able to make a movement response accurately and quickly
  13. Must be able to sit for long periods of time while observing Clients
  14. Must be able to continuously observe a Client overnight without falling asleep
  15. Must be able to hear, and to speak, read and write English fluently
  16. Understanding of infection control practices and principles
  17. Able to perform duties in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions
  18. Able to practice effective time management

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care:
  2. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with established policies and procedures
  3. Uses effective communication and interpersonal skills in performing duties
  4. Provides emotional support
  5. Provides care under the direction of the nursing staff according to the Standards of Practice of [this company] and the healthcare facility where assigned
  6. Personal Responsibilities:
  7. Demonstrates collaboration and respect for patients/patient’s family, co-workers and other members of the healthcare team.
  8. Equipment and Supplies:
  9. Ensures that adequate supplies and linens are available at patient’s bedside and for oncoming shift
  10. Maintains Client’s environment in a neat, safe manner.
  11. Communication
  12. Reports any unusual occurrence or incident that occurs during their shift, according to policy.
  13. Keeps nurse informed of Client condition changes or immediate problems on unit.
  14. Documents according the Facility standards as required
  15. Professionalism
  16. Conducts self in a professional manner at all times
  17. Appears neat, clean and dresses according to dress code.
  18. Wears appropriate [company] identification badge at all times.
  19. Attends mandatory in-services as required by [this company].
  20. Attends [company] meetings (on-site and teleconference) as required
  21. Works effectively with other members of the healthcare team
  22. Performs effectively in stressful situations (e.g., due to changing Client acuity, census fluctuations and spontaneous reaction to situations as they arise)
  23. Is willing to help others when own work is done
  24. Is dependable as reflected in work attendance and being on time for assignments and not leaving before the assigned shift is over
  25. Able to work closely with a variety of healthcare workers including; nurses, other health team members.
  26. Must display social sensitivity, acting suitably in all situations and adjusting behaviour to fit the occasion and interpret how others are feeling.
  27. Behaviour must be flexible in response to changing situations.

Other Considerations:

  1. There is the potential for exposure to blood and body fluids, sharps injury, contagious and infectious disease, including; hepatitis, HIV,
  2. There is also the potential for exposure to Communicable diseases including; TB, chicken pox, MMR, and to chemicals such as cleaning solutions and medications. There may be noxious odours present.
  3. There is the need to work with Clients on isolation for airborne and contact spread organisms and the requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, masks for continuous periods of time (up to and including a 12-hour shift).
  4. There is the potential for exposure to a potential or actual violent situation in the workplace such as a Code White situation where the worker could be injured in some way by the Client or Public (e.g., hit, punch, kick, spit) during the provision of care

 

Education / Certification /Surveillance:

  • Graduated from an Ontario Ministry of University, Colleges or Private Career College approved PSW program
  • Successful Completion of PSW National exam (NACC) for those graduating from a private career college
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Healthcare Provider Level (BCLS-HCP) that is renewed every 2 years
  • Current N95 Mask Fit testing and renewed every 2 years
  • Willing to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Background check as a condition of employment, with ‘clear’ results and renewed as required by [company] policy
  • Up to date Communicable Disease vaccinations as required by [company] standards and the Public Hospitals Act

 

Work Experience:

  • Acute care hospital experience an asset but not required
  • Clinical experience in a long-term care facility as a PSW student

Reporting Relationship:

The position reports to the Facility Charge Nurse while on assignment, for direction in regard to the provision of Client care. This position reports to the [company] Staffing Office in regard to booking, cancelling and changing shift assignments, performance issues, and reporting incidents or injuries.

Candidates will only be required to work at 1 unit per day and the shift will be an 8 or 12 hour shift.

 


Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Must be able to be scheduled for assignments that are considered “urgent/last minute/early morning” (e.g. called for assignments within 2 hours or from start of shift)
  • Flexible to work all shifts (days, evenings, and nights), including weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
  • Required to work two (2) weekends per month (A “weekend” is defined as shifts covering the period from 3pm on Friday to 07:30am on Monday)

 

Our Requirements

  • Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate from an Ontario Community College Program OR a private career college in Ontario that is registered with and approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities with successful completion of the final examination administered by the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) OR an approved Ontario Board of Education PSW Program
  • Must be registered with the Personal Support Worker Registry of Ontario
  • Must have clinical experience as a PSW within the past two (2) years. Recent acute care hospital experience working on a medical and surgical unit within the past two (2) years is preferred.
  • Proof of current immunization for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, hepatitis a and hepatitis b
  • Proof of negative two-step TB skin test within the past one (1) year or negative chest x-ray within the past five (5) years
  • Proof of current/up-to-date influenza vaccination
  • Current BCLS-HCP (HealthCare Provider)
  • Current N95 Mask Fit Test Certificate
  • Completion of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training required
  • Willing to undergo Vulnerable Sector Police Check as a condition of hire
